Youngsters dressed just like the big rodeo contestants, or in street clothes, try to go the required time on running and sometimes bucking sheep. What a fun time.
Always a fan-favorite event, mutton busting returns as part of the Allen County Fair Rodeo action this year.
The 26th annual Allen County Fair Rodeo is Friday and Saturday on the fairgrounds in Riverside Park.
The mutton busting takes place before each night’s regular rodeo performances. Registration for the competition is 6 p.m. with a limit of 30 riders each night. There is a $5 registration fee.
The mutton busting competition begins at 7 p.m. in the rodeo arena each night. The top five riders each night will ride again during the rodeo performance for a cash prize.

For the first time in its 26 years, the rodeo is kicking off the Allen County Fair. The 118th annual county fair runs Friday through Aug. 5 at Iola’s Riverside Park.
The two-night rodeo is at the Lyle Dreher Roughriders Arena. Performances are at 8 p.m. at the arena.
Tickets for each performance can be purchased at the gate for $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-10. Children age 5 and younger will be admitted free when with a paid adult.
It will take two event tickets per adult and one per child to attend the rodeo. The annual fair rodeo is sponsored by B&W Trailer Hitches, Humboldt and Twin Motors Ford, Iola.
Along with the regular rodeo events each night, special kid games are scheduled.
On Friday night is the boot/shoe race for ages 7 and under. Each child comes out in the rodeo arena, takes off a boot or shoe which is placed in a pile. The first three kids to find their own boot or shoe, put it on and cross the finish line receive a cash prize.
For boys and girls, 7 and under, on Saturday is the Stick Horse race. The fair board will provide some stick horses but kids may bring their own to make sure they get in the race. The first three finishers earn cash prizes.
Both nights for children 8-12, is the chicken scramble. Chase chickens, catch a chicken, keep it or trade in for cash prize.
